As a Christian, is God your heart’s desire? Do you wake up thinking of Jesus? Do you spend your day reflecting on His goodness? Do you go to bed thinking of and dreaming of Him? Is your every desire to please Him? Is there a love for Him set inside of you that compels you to no longer live for yourself and your desires but to live for Him and His purpose? This sounds like pure bliss and such a focus on our Savior is a joy that cannot be explained with words. It’s like meeting a new interest. When you are away from him, you spend your time thinking about him. When with him, he has your full attention. Every word he says is burned firmly in your heart because you have set your heart on him.
I remember when my heart was so consumed in this way for the Lover of my soul; for my Savior and God. Who would think that a person could love someone this much Whom they had not seen physically? Well, as a matter of fact, I did fall in love with my husband this way; we actually met over the internet. But this was different because I knew that He loved me enough to send His Son to die for me.
Needless to say, as it is now, I sometimes find myself caught up in the fast pace of daily life and this type of heart connection with God is not there. Then something brings me back to what’s important. I think of how it has hurt me when someone I’ve loved seemed so distant and did not reciprocate that love. No matter how much they’ve said the words, only their actions counted.
In the Old Testament, God had an issue with the children of Israel. His problem was not that they did not worship Him; in fact, they kept all of the required festivals and sacrifices. The problem that God had with them was that they were all talk. In fact, He said in Isaiah 29:13, ‘“These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.”‘ In other words, He was not their heart’s desire. So if at some time you find yourself off path and have lost that heart connection with God, allow the drawing of His Spirit to bring you back to where He is your heart’s desire.
