Light Up the World With God’s Ambiance
For a full day, I kept hearing the word “sconce” in my spirit. If I were to estimate the number of times this word rang in my thoughts, I would guess it to be at least five times within that day. I knew I had previously heard the word but the occurrence was so rare that I could not recall its meaning. And though this word was hardly used within my vocabulary and now seemed to repeatedly resonate in my mind, I chose to ignore it. In fact, I had no desire or thoughts of inquisition toward it. I’d be carrying on about my day as usual, maybe working on a project for my job or performing some other task and the word, kept “popping in my mind”, ”sconce”.
Very early the next morning, I found myself unable to sleep and there it was again, “sconce”. Finally in frustration, I said to myself, “what is a sconce?!” Clearly by now, my attention was finally captured since at that point, the realization came that the Holy Spirit wanted me to pay attention and do research. So I got out bed, went into another room and did the best search I could do, on my smartphone. I looked up the definition. I didn’t even know how to spell the word and it took a couple of tries to finally find it.
“a bracket candlestick or group of candlesticks; also : an electric light fixture patterned on a candle sconce”
After reading this definition, I had an inkling of an idea of what this object was but I Googled a picture as well.
To my surprise, I knew exactly what a sconce was. In layman’s terms, it is a container that holds a light or candle and is mounted to a wall. When I’ve seen these previously, they have given off a small amount of light and were used more for ambiance. I’m sure their original uses prior to the existence of electrical lighting was probably for providing light rather than setting a mood, however in modern day it seems to be used for the former.
So what does this mean? I believe the Holy Spirit is speaking and reminding us that as the people of God, we are to allow the light of the Holy Spirit to shine through us. We each are to be that small amount of light used to set off the mood that God has intended within this world. Individually the light of the Holy Spirit within does not seem to shine bright because similar to the sconce, we are in a place where the darkness seems to be predominant. We can be encouraged because we each being one of many sconces and the Holy Spirit being the Light within, we set the mood. We are God’s ambiance and though the world is full of darkness right now, God has strategically placed His people so that together we set off His ambiance, the ambiance of the Holy Spirit, His Light in the world.
Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV 1984), ‘”You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.’
